Chelsea ready to pay Werner's £54m release clause as they offer contract to Leipzig striker

Oct 19, 2021
The Blues are looking to add one of Europe's most prolific centre-forwards to their ranks when the transfer window reopens

After scoring, Chelsea prepared to pay Timo Werner's 54 million pounds (60 million euros / 68 million US dollars) termination clause and provided a contract for the Leipzig striker.

Werner has been in an exciting state in the Bundesliga this season. Leipzig has scored 25 goals in 29 games, helping the club rise to third place.

The 24-year-old's outstanding performance attracted the attention of many top European clubs, including Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Liverpool.

Chelsea is also considered to be a landing point for the German center, and Gail also learned that the club had contacted Leipzig about a potential transaction.

According to Leipzig's eligibility for the UEFA Champions League this season, the clause is between 55-60m Euro (50-54m GBP), but Chelsea is willing to pay any price, and Liverpool admitted failure in the pursuit of the German international.

The Blues have provided Werner with a £9 million ($11.4 million) contract at Stamford Bridge each year and plan to trigger his buyout clause when the summer transfer window opens.

Werner instructed the club not to talk to Werner before moving in January.

Indeed, in January, Werner’s terms were only about 36 million pounds (40 million euros / 45 million US dollars), but he wanted to watch the entire season with Leipzig RB and try to win the Bundesliga championship.

Frank Lampard admitted earlier this week that after missing many goals in January, he wanted to "add a small amount" to the team.

Tammy Abraham has been Chelsea's top scorer in the 2019-20 season. Olivier Giroud promised to renew with the club in May, but Michy Batshuayi It seems to be scheduled to leave Stamford Bridge later this year.

Werner unabashedly concealed his desire to participate in the Premier League, and said that compared with the transfer to Bayern, the potential overseas transfer will be more attractive to him. Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool has long been regarded as the leader of Werner, but in the economic environment of the coronavirus crisis, they are cautious about the transaction.

The German international also hinted that Liverpool would be his preferred destination. In an interview with the World Times in February, he expressed confidence that he would be the "suitable candidate" for Jurgen Klopp's system. #aclotzone

However, former Chelsea midfielder Craig Burley warned Werner not to switch to Anfield. He insisted that the Leipzig striker may not guarantee a place in the eleventh Red Army.
